"In 2000 the Fondation René Touraine fellowship was granted to me for a research fellowship at the Harvard Skin Disease Research Center, Department of Dermatology, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, USA (directed by Prof. TS Kupper). At that time I was already a board-certified dermatologist and allergist/immunologist and was working as a research fellow in the field of cutaneous inflammation (psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, drug eruptions) at the Department of Dermatology and Clinic for Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology/Allergology, Inselspital, University Hospital of Bern in Switzerland. In order to broaden my experience I then then decided to pursue basic research in the USA. Together with other grants the Fondation René Touraine fellowship enabled me to spend over 2 years in Prof. Kupper’s lab in Boston. The research projects included investigations on identification of autoantigens in psoriatic plaques using expression cloning and the disruption of the T-cell repertoire in cutaneous T cell lymphoma. I was very impressed by the collegial atmosphere, high quality and possibilities for collaborative research e.g. various core facilities at the Harvard Skin Disease Research Center in Boston. After returning to Switzerland I became associate professor at the Department of Dermatology, Inselspital, University Hospital of Bern. My current research has focused on innate and acquired immunological mechanisms in inflammatory skin diseases."
